A man was killed in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) called gunfight with them in city’s Pubail area early Friday, reports news agency UNB.
The deceased, identified as Nazrul Islam Naju, of Tongi area in Gazipur, is a drug trader, RAB claimed.
Tipped off that a gang six seven drug traders were gathering in the area, a team of RAB-1 conducted a drive there around 2:30am, said assistant superintendent of RAB-1 Kamruzzaman.
Sensing presence of the law enforcement members, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing the RAB men to fire back, he said.
Nazrul sustained bullet injuries as he was caught in the line of fire while the others managed to flee.
Later, he was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital where physicians declared him dead.
Nazrul was wanted in 12 cases, said RAB.
One pistol, one magazine, one round of bullet, three shot guns and some yaba tablets were recovered from the spot, Kamruzzaman added.
According to a human rights body, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfires or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh in 2018.
In the first six months of 2019, the number of such killing was at least 200, the rights body said on its website.
