Dengue claims two lives in Khulna

A 70-year-old woman and a schoolboy died of dengue on Sunday - the first reported deaths from the mosquito-borne disease in Khulna district, reports UNB.

The deceased are -- Morjina Begum, 70, and Monjur Sheikh, 13,of Khaja Danga village of Rupsha.

Morjina was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital a week ago and died in the early hours of Sunday.

The assistant registrar of medicine department Partho Pratim confirmed her death. Monjur, a class X student of Kazdia Government High School, was admitted to Gazi Medical College and Hospital around 11:00pm on Saturday.

He died about seven hours later, said the hospital's Chairman Gazi Mizanur Rahman.

Since the beginning of this year, 136 people were hospitalised in Khulna with dengue. Currently, 80 patients are being treated at hospitals, according to government data.

This year, the dengue outbreak has been severe with hundreds of people being infected every day. Most of the patients are found in Dhaka.
