Man killed in reported gunfight with DB

A man was killed in what the Detective Branch (DB) of police called gunfight with them in Katapara area of Madhabdi municipality, Narsingdi early Saturday, reports news agency UNB.

The deceased identified as Mithun, 30, son of a certain Jakir Hossain of the area was a listed top terror, police claimed.

Tipped off that the top terror Mithun and his associates would gather in the area, a team of DB police raided the area around 2:00am, said Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of DB police.

The terrorists opened fire when the DB team reached there, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, he claimed.

Mithun sustained bullet injuries during the reported gunfight.

He was taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where physicians declared him dead, the OC added.

Police arrested four associates of Mithun and recovered two foreign pistols and a shutter gun from the spot.

The OC said Mithun was wanted in 12 cases including those of rape, murder and extortion.

According to a human rights body, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfires or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh in 2018.

In the first six months of 2019, the number of such killing was at least 200, the rights body said on its website.
