Gambling instruments seized from Chattogram club

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) launched drives at three sports clubs -- Abahani, Mohammedan and Muktijoddha - in Chattogram city on Saturday evening, reports UNB. 


Assistant director (media) ASP Mahmudul Hasan of Rab-7 said they started the raids on the clubs around 7:00pm as part of their drive against gambling and drugs.

Various gambling instruments were seized from the Muktijoddha Club, he said, adding that details will be disclosed later at a press briefing.

Drives continued till filing of this report around 9:45pm.

On Friday night, Kotwali police conducted a drive at a club named -'Hangout' and arrested its owner and his son.

Law enforcers have started hunting down the dens of gambling and drugs across the country.

The elite force of RAB detained 142 people from a casino at Fakirerpool Youngmen's Club in the capital on Wednesday.

Later, they arrested its president Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan, also organising secretary of Dhaka South city unit of Jubo League. He, however, expelled from the organisation.

Rab members arrested Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim along with illegal firearms and a huge amount of money from his Niketan office in the capital on Friday afternoon.
RAB executive magistrate Mohammad Sarwar Alam said they seized Tk 1.65 billion Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) and Tk 18 million in cash and foreign currencies during the drive.

"A foreign-made pistol, seven shotguns and a huge cache of bullets were also seized from the office of GKB and Company Pvt Limited, owned by Shamim. The firearms were allegedly used in extortion and tender manipulation," the executive magistrate said.
