Don’t want to lose another son: Abrar’s mother

The horrific murder of BUET student Abrar stunned the country, yet in the midst of unspeakable misery, his mother is now forced to worry over the fate of her younger, now only surviving son.

At the family’s Kushtia residence Thursday evening, Abrar’s mother Rokeya Begum told UNB: “I’ve already lost one son; I don’t want to lose another son.”

Her fears will have been heightened by a slew of untoward incidents her younger son Abrar Faiyyaz has found himself embroiled in since the death of the elder brother he idolized.

“Students have come out for my son but I don’t want any mother to lose her son,” she said.

“All the university students are my sons,” she said, demanding assurances that none can torture them.

Rokeya Begum also disclosed that the family is feeling very insecure. “I want my other son’s security. I want justice for my murdered son, and I want all the killers to be rusticated from Buet.”

Besides the grieving mother, Abrar’s father too has been having a hard time coping with the mental trauma of losing his bright and affable firstborn.

Abrar’s father Barkatullah said he wants to see his son’s killers suffer the maximum punishmnent before his own time on earth is over.

He also sought more focused investigation to bring all who were involved in his son’s killing to justice, and demanded submission of the chargesheet and quick disposal of the case through the speedy trial tribunal.

Earlier on Thursday, additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monirul Islam said all involved directly or indirectly with the murder of Buet student Abrar Fahad will be brought to book.

He also said police will investigate the murder with utmost professionalism and sincerity.

Monirul also said police have so far arrested 16 people over the murder. Of them, 12 are FIR-named accused.

Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of Bangladesh University of Technology (Buet), was beaten to death reportedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university.

He was found dead on the staircase of the dormitory early Monday. BCL on that day expelled 11 leaders and activists of its Buet unit, including the arrestees, for their involvement in the murder of Abrar.
