Mehedi Hasan and Abdullah Ajmir were students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). Both of them completed their graduation in mechanical engineering from the university.

However, they allegedly involved in militant activities instead of joining any professions.

Both of the students accepted themselves as the members of neo-JMB, and reportedly carried out recent Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks on police in Gulistan and Science Laboratory area in the city.

Additional police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and also the chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, Monirul Islam, came up with the information at a press briefing at DMP media center at Minto Road on Monday noon.

Police arrested Mehedi Hasan Tamim and Abdullah Ajmir on Sunday.

Monirul Islam said the members of police also recovered a laptop and three mobile phones from them. They admitted that they involved in militant activities while studying at KUET and got training at a remote char of Bhola in 2018, the police official added.

Monirul also said the arrestees were enlisted in the military wing of the organisation led by Jamal Uddin Rafique who is the younger brother of Farid Uddin Rumi, who was arrested from Narayanganj’s Fatullah on 23 September.

He also said that a bomb making factory was established at the house of Rafique, where they also discussed how to improve the IEDs.

The arrestees were produced before the court, seeking a 10-day remand.
