Khaleda critically ill, says Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said there was an uncertainty about the return of party chairperson Khaleda Zia with good health from the hospital.

Terming the condition of the BNP chairperson critical, he said she would receive treatment as per her wish should she be released on bail.

Mirza Fakhrul made the remark after offering prayers at the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the occasion of the 41st founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, youth front of the party.

Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) since April. She has been convicted in corruption cases, which her party term politically motivated.

BNP and Khaleda’s family members say the condition of the former prime minister is deteriorating day by day.

Mirza Fakhrul alleged that the government was not granting her bail as they had an ill motive behind it.

The BNP secretary general said Khaleda was in good health when she was brought to jail.

But now she cannot get up from the bed and cannot walk and eat, he said, adding that her proper treatment is not possible at BSMMU.

Several family members met Khaleda Zia at the hospital on Friday.

While speaking to reporters, her elder sister Selima Islam said the BNP chair's condition has gotten worse.

She said Khaleda would be taken abroad if she was granted bail.

Earlier, BNP MPs met her and following the visit they demanded that she recieve treatment abroad.
