Man killed in police 'gunfight'

Prothom Alo IllustrationA man was killed in what police called a gunfight with them in Harinakunda of Jhenaidah early Monday.

The deceased, Badshah Mia, 52, son of Helal Uddin from Harinakunda's Jorapukur village, was the regional commander of outlawed outfit Janajuddha, according to police.

He was wanted in nine cases, police claimed.

Harinakunda police station officer-in-charge, Md Asaduzzaman, said that they, on information that Badshah was having a secret meeting with his gang, a team of police conducted a raid in a bush of Tentulia village around 2:00am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the members of the gang opened fire on them, triggering the police to fire back and engage in a gun battle, he added.

Badshah was found lying bullet-injured after the exchange of around 20 rounds of bullets, he also said adding that he was sent to Harinakunda Upazila Health Complex where the physicians declared him dead.

Police recovered one pistol from the spot.

Police claimed that two of their members, sub-inspector Sohrab Hossain and constable Sohel Ahmed, were also inured during the 'gunfight'.
