Police foil left parties' rally marking ‘Black Day for Democracy’

Police on Monday foiled the protest programme of Left Democratic Alliance marking the 'Black Day for Democracy'.

The law enforcers charged baton to disperse the LDA’s rally towards the Prime Minister Office twice at Kadam Foara and Matsya Bhaban intersections in the capital.

LDA alleged that several of their leaders and activists were injured at the attack.

LDA, a coalition of eight left political parties, observing the 'Black Day for Democracy' alleged of widespread vote rigging by ruling Awami League on 30 December last year.

The alliance organised the protest programme in front of National Press Club. They later brought out a procession towards the Prime Minister Office. Police intercepted their rally at Kadam Foara intersection.

The protesters marched on defying the police and were intercepted again at Matsya Bhaban area. A clash broke out as police attacked the rally around 1:00pm.

The dispersed crowd gathered in front of the National Press Club again and denounced the police action.

Presidium member of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Abdullahel Kafi said that the police had attacked their rally without any provocation.

Several leaders of the alliance were injured by the attack, he alleged.
