Why women should use husbands’ addresses in job application: HC

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule seeking explanation as to why women candidates should use their husbands’ permanent addresses as their own as per the condition of a recruitment circular of Bangladesh Bank (BB), reports UNB.

It also wanted to know why the condition of using husband’s permanent address by a female candidate should not be declared illegal.

The bench of justice JBM Hassan and justice Md Khairul Alam issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed in the form of Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

The court also sought explanation why directives should not be given to issue a fresh circular for assistant director (general) post at the central bank revoking the condition.

Five people, including public administration, commerce and finance division secretaries, have been asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

Advocate Ainun Nahar Siddiqua stood for the writ petitioner while attorney general Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and Naripokkho, a women's activist organisation, filed the writ petition.

Bangladesh Bank published the circular on 1 December, directing women candidates to use their husbands’ permanent addresses as their own which violated the equality of women as per the constitution of the country, said Ainun Nahar.
