DU student rape: RAB detains a suspect

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have detained a suspect in connection with the rape of a Dhaka University female student in Kurmitola, Dhaka.

The detention was made following a drive on Tuesday night.

Earlier, a security agency said they were keeping a watch on a suspect in connection with the rape incident.

The suspect would be detained after verifying necessary information, they had added.

Officials said the identity of the detainee is not being disclosed on grounds of investigation.

The victim has been undergoing treatment at the One-stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, the students of Dhaka University protested the rape of their fellow and demanded capital punishment of the rapist.

The victim, a residential student of DU, was raped after she got down from a university bus in the capital's Kurmitola on Sunday evening while going to her friend's house in Shewra.

The victim’s father filed a case with Cantonment police station in this regard.

The statement of the case was submitted in the court on Tuesday.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court issued an order on Tuesday to submit the report of investigation by 28 January.

According to the case statement, the student set out in a university bus at 5:40pm from the campus to reach her friend’s house in Shewra area in the capital.

The bus stopped in Kurmitola at 7:00pm and the student started walking towards Shewra.

An unknown person (aged between 25 and 30 years old) grabbed her by the neck near Golf Club.

The student lost consciousness and later she was raped and beaten up.

The statement also said the rapist was about 5 feet 4 inches in height. He was dark in complexion and his hair was short. He wore old jeans and a black shirt. He took her bag, Tk 2000 and cell phone.
