The man who raped the Dhaka University student in Kurmitola area of Dhaka on Sunday evening is a serial rapist, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members claimed on Wednesday.

The elite force arrested the rapist, Majnu, aged around 30, from Tongi area of Gazipur on Tuesday night.

RAB also said the mobile phone of the DU student and other belongings were recovered from the rapist's possession.

Earlier in the morning, RAB’s media wing director Sarwar Bin Kashem told Prothom Alo that the rape victim had identified the rapist.

According to the case statement, the student on Sunday set out on a university bus at 5:40pm from the campus to reach her friend’s house in Shewra area in the capital.

The bus stopped in Kurmitola at 7:00pm and the student started walking towards Shewra.

An unknown person (aged between 25 and 30 years old) grabbed her by the neck near the Golf Club in the area.

The student lost consciousness and later she was raped and beaten up.

The statement also said the rapist was about 5 feet 4 inches in height. He was dark in complexion and his hair was short. He wore old jeans and a black shirt. He took her bag, Tk 2,000 and cell phone.

UNB adds: “The victim told us that the rapist did not have front teeth. This helped us identify the offender,” the Rab officer said.

Mojnu, lt col Sarwar said, became a serial rapist after the death of his wife. “He used to work as a hawker and sometimes mugged people,” he said.

After raping and snatching the mobile phone of the DU student, Mojnu sold it to a woman named Aruna, who sold it to one Khairul.

“We tracked the victim’s phone and detained Khairul from Shewra and then Aruna. We arrested Mojnu from Shewra on early Wednesday based on information given by her,” the Rab officer said.

The arrestees will be handed over to the Investigation Officer of the case.
