A man was killed in what the law enforcement said a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Barua in Khilkhet, Dhaka early Tuesday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain, 34.
Tipped off that a gang of drug peddlers gathered in the area, a RAB team rushed there around 2:10am, company commander of RAB-1, ASP Kamruzzaman, told UNB.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the alleged drug peddlers opened fire on the RAB members forcing them to fire back in self-defence, he added.
Later, Hossain’s body was recovered from the spot.
The elite force members also recovered 1,950 pieces of yabas, four shooter-guns and 34 cartridges.
According to the human rights body, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfires or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies including police, RAB, BGB in 2018.
In the first 11 months of 2019, the number of such killing was at least 347, the rights body said on its website.
