Renowned Nazrul singer Firoza Begum has died of her old-age complications while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80. Her family said she breathed her last at 8:28pm.

Firoza was admitted to hospital with heart and kidney complications. She also got jaundice.

Doctors said they had been trying their best but the patient was unresponsive to the treatments.

Firoza Begum was born on 28 July 1934 in a well-off family in Faridpur. Her father was Mohammad Ismail and mother Begum Kaokabunnesa. She was married to Kamal Das Gupta with three sons: Tahsin Ahmed, Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed.

Her first gramophone record of some religious music hit the market while she was just 12. Gramophone company HMV released the album.

She was trained up directly by Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

In her carrier she bagged numerous awards and conferred with honours. Swadhinata Award, Ekushay Award, Netaji Shubhash Chandra Bose Award, Satyajit Roy award, Nasiruddin gold medal, Nazrul Academy award and , Meril-Prothom Alo lifelong honour and D.Litt from Burdwan University were conferred on her.
