Niloufer Manzur laid to rest at Banani graveyard

Educationist Niloufer Manzur was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in Dhaka. Her son Syed Nasim Manzur was present during the burial ceremony on behalf of the family.

Niloufer Manzur died of COVID-19 at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital early Tuesday.

She was 74.

Non-government organisation Al-Markazul Islami assisted in holding janaza and burial ceremony.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, the organisation’s acting chairman Hamza Shahidul Islam said, “Niloufer Manzur was buried at Banani graveyard complying the government rules after janaza. Her son Syed Nasim Manzur was present. The burial ceremony was held between 11am and 12pm on Tuesday.”

There is a compulsion of restricting presence of people in janaza if anyone dies of coronavirus.

Educationist Niloufer Manzur founded the English medium Sunbeams School at her house in 1974.

Over four decades, she turned a small school of only 15 students into a top educational institution of the country.

Niloufer Manzur was the wife of Apex Group chairman Manzur Elahi, who also was an adviser to a caretaker government of Bangladesh. Her son Nasim Manzur was the president of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka.

She was undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka for the last few days, he added.

Apex Group founder Manzur Elahi also was tested positive for novel coronavirus infections. He was placed in home isolation as he displayed no symptoms of the virus infection.
