AL leader killed on the way back from meeting in Tangail

Awami League leader Aminul Islam Talukdar alias Nixon (48) was killed on Friday in Gopalpur, Tangail. He was killed while returning home from a meeting with party leaders and activists on Friday night.

Aminul Islam was the general secretary of Gopalpur upazila Hadia union Awami League. He was an assistant professor of the social science department at the Lion Nazrul Islam Degree College in Tangail sadar upazila. He is from the village Ajgora of Hadia union, but would live with his family at the nearby Dhanbari upazila sadar.

According to police and local sources, Aminul on Friday afternoon went to the village Ajgora and in the evening held a meeting at the Ajgora intersection with party men.

After the meeting he was returning home to Dhanbari by motorbike when miscreants stopped him near the bridge on Ajgora canal. They attacked him, slashed him with knives and left him lying there. The local people took him to the Modhupur upazila health complex where the physician declared him dead.

Health and family planning officer of Modhupur upazila health complex, Rubina Islam, said that he had already died when he was brought to the hospital.

The Gopalpur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mustafizur Rahman said the case in this regard would be filed at the Dhanbari police station as the killing occurred in that area. The police sent Aminul’s body to the morgue for autopsy.
