Khaleda Zia ‘critically ill’, says Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the party chairperson Khaleda Zia is ‘critically ill’.

Alleging that the government has denied her advance treatment, Fakhrul urged the authorities to shun the political vengeance and let her take proper treatment.

Fakhrul said this after inaugurating the party’s nationwide tree plantation campaign by planting a sapling at Dhaka North City Corporation’s Beraid area.

He said although Khaleda Zia, who has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital, has recuperated from Covid-19, she is suffering from various post-Covid and other complications.

“She has been suffering from various diseases as she did not receive treatment during four years in jail. She has developed heart, kidney and liver complications. She had been suffering from Arthritis for long,” Fakhrul said adding, “with all these complications, physicians have said she is in high risk.”

Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia’s family members appealed to the government to send her abroad for better treatment but the government did not give her the chance out of political consideration.

Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital on 27 April after contracting Covid. She was shifted to CCU of the hospital on 3 May and stayed there for a month.

A ten member medical team led by Shahabuddin Talukder is overseeing her treatment.
