President M Abdul Hamid is set to start dialogues with political parties to constitute the election commission (EC).

With holding a dialogue with Jatiya Party, the main opposition in Jatiya Sangsad (parliament), it will kick off on 20 December.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, the president's press secretary Mohmmad Joynal Abedin said the president will hold dialogues with the political parties, and preparations are underway.

The tenure of the current election commission will expire in February next year. According to the constitution, a law has to be formulated for the constitution of the election commission. But the law has not been formulated in the country. Under such a circumstance, president Abdul Hamid formed search committee in the last two terms after holding dialogues with the political parties.

Those committees made lists of probable candidates and the president appointed the chief election commissioners and commissioners from those lists.

Different organisations and civil society representatives pressed home a demand to formulate a law in accordance with the constitution for the formation of the election commission.

When asked about the dialogue with the president, Jatiya Party secretary general Mujibul Haque said, "We have not yet received any letter officially. But a message has been given from the president's office about the dialogue on 20 December."

Whether they would place any proposal, in reply to this query, Mujibul Haque said they would hold a meeting with the leaders of the party and fix their agenda.
