Prothom Alo Trust distributes relief in remote Barishal village
Meherunnessa's husband Altaf Hossain has been bedridden for quite some time. Their two sons are rickshaw van pullers but they had no work of late because of the coronavirus outbreak, and hence no money.
Now the cyclone Amphan has damaged the roof of their small house as well. However, things got a little better for Meherunnessa on Wednesday, when they got relief goods, including rice, potato and lentils, from the Prothom Alo Trust.
"At least we won't need to worry about food for the next few days. May the Almighty bless you," said Meherunnessa, who lives in Bhangarmukh, a remote village in Babuganj upazila of the district.
Bondhushava members helped the Prothom Alo Trust members distribute the relief material among the destitute in the area. It took them two and half hours to reach the remote village from the town. When they reached the Agarpur Altaf Memorial High School in Bir Shreshtha Captain Mahiuddin Jahangir Union, it was almost sunset.
Sujan Akon, 35, makes his living repairing rickshaw and rickshaw vans. He said, "We cannot manage meals everyday. I cannot look at the faces of my daughters. No one knows how we spend our days."
Sub-inspector Manobendro Balo and Barishal Bondhushava general secretary Naimul Islam were present at the time.
Till Wednesday, the Prothom Alo Trust has received over Tk 2 million in donations from various sources.
