At least 40 intern physicians refrained from work at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barishal on Saturday demanding adequate safety gears amid the coronavirus outbreak.

According to witnesses, the interns took the step after a fellow student tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. They all are the students of Habibur Rahman Hall of the college.

On Saturday afternoon, they sought necessary safety gears from the hospital director and demanded samples of 15 students who came in contact with the infected student be tested.

Although samples collected from them were sent to lab for test, the interns have refrained from providing services since afternoon.

Contacted, Bakir Hossain, director of the hospital, claimed they are facing no problem as other interns are working as before.

“The issue will be fixed soon,” he added.
