Two Bangladeshis die of COVID-19 in Washington

Two Bangladesh nationals have died of the novel coronavirus in Washington DC of the United States.

The deceased are physician Abdul Mannan, 80, a resident of Maryland, and Mujahidur Rahman, 70 of Virginia. Their deaths were reported on 11 April.

Abdul Mannan, from Bangladesh’s Bogura district, migrated to the US in 1977 after obtaining a degree from England following his MBBS from Rajshahi Medical College. He had two children.

Virginia’s Mujahidur Rahman was the first Bangladeshi to die of the respiratory disease in Washington DC.

Mujahidur’s wife first contracted COVID-19. After she tested positive, the family was sent to home quarantine. Later, it was transmitted to five members of the family including Mujahidur.

As of 12 April, so far 121 Bangladeshis died of the novel coronavirus in the US.

As Mujahidur's condition deteriorated on 11 April, he was taken to the hospital where he later died.

His death created panic among the Bangladeshi community in Washington DC.

A close relative of Mujahidur said his funeral will be held after the hospital releases his body, following an autopsy.
