A unit of Barapukuria Coal-fired Thermal Power Plant, which was shut down for shortage of coal, resumed operation on Monday noon for 6-7 days to meet the demand of electricity during Eid-ul-Azha.

Officials said the authorities concerned took the decision to run the power plant during the festival to mitigate sufferings of the common people.

It requires 5,200 tonnes of coal every day to run the three units of the 525 MW power plant.

Manager and executive engineer of the power plant, Mahbubur Rahman, said currently a total of 5000/6000 tonnes of coal are in stock using which 70-80 MW electricity can be generated from unit-2.

With this, the problem of low voltage and load-shedding will be reduced in the region, he said.

Barapukuria Coal-fired Thermal Power Plant was shut down on 22 July for shortage of coal.
