Celebrated singer Abdul Jabbar died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment with multiple health complications.

Hospital sources said the singer breathed his last at 9:20am after suffering from liver, kidney, and heart complications.

Jabbar’s songs in Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra inspired people of Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) to fight during the liberation war in 1971.

He was awarded Bangabandhu Padak (1973), Ekushey Padak (1980), Swadhinata Padak (1996), and different national and international awards.

Jabbar was born in Kushtia on 7 November 1938. He first took music lessons from Ustad Osman Gani and Ustad Lutful Haque.

He became an enlisted singer of radio in 1958 and television in 1964.
