Sometimes it’s better not to sing: Haider Hosyn

Haider HosynCollected

Haider Hosyn will perform live tonight (Saturday) at 10:30 on Prothom Alo’s Facebook page. He has not been making much appearance in the music scene over the recent past. He talks about that and life at present, in an interview with Prothom Alo

Q:

How come you have become so detached from the music world?

Music is my hobby. My passion lies elsewhere. Also, after writing a song, composing the music and singing it, if I have to promote it as well, that is just not done. I don’t think it is an artiste’s job to promote his own songs. And singing is such a hassle now. If you sing, you have to have a video too.

Q:

The song ‘Mon ki je chai bolo’, which you wrote and put to music, still haunts music lovers. Don’t you write songs anymore?

Yes, that song was sung by my band, Winning. I was one of the founders of the band and I even named it. I haven’t given up writing songs. I wrote one in March too. I still write. I hardly go out. I mix a bit less with people.

Q:

After that song, you kinda disappeared from the scene. Where have you been?

I had to spend quite a long time in the UK, the US and several other countries for studies and work.

Q:

Did you receive royalty for your album ‘Faishya gesi’?

Hardly, but then I didn’t expect it either. Such a system hasn’t evolved in our country. You can’t expect anything out of the norm.

Q:

You seem to be fed up about promotions. Why don’t you give the responsibility to a third party? It is easier nowadays.

I did give the responsibility of promotions to others, but I just wasn’t satisfied. They say one thing, do another. There is a lack of professionalism in this regard in our country. I give someone a responsibility, it’s not done. I give someone else the responsibility, it’s not done. Then I see my song is being used to promote something else, and I am nowhere in the scene. Sometimes it’s better not to sing, just keep to myself.

Q:

How have you been spending you time?

Business takes up a lot of my time. We can’t go out, so I mostly do my work over the phone. I stay at home, spend time with my wife.

Q:

You will be singing tonight on Prothom Alo’s Facebook page. Any new songs?

I’ll be singing my old numbers. Sometimes you just are not in the mood for new numbers. You just don’t feel like taking up the guitar or harmonium. Maybe it’s just a matter of age.
