Dhunat CC block pilferage: Bring culprits to book
Too many people in the country finds abiding by the law a folly and takes pride in looting the public property. But there is no greatness in cheating your own country, rather it only shows how low one can stoop to. And we just saw this again in Dhunat upazila of Bagura district.
As per a Prothom Alo report, Sohel Rana, a member of Sirajganj district’s Kazipur upazila Awami League, removed the CC blocks from the embankment next to the river Jamuna and used them to build a road so that his sand-laden trucks can move. Worse, he says he committed no crime by doing this.
The CC blocks are an amalgamation of a mixture of stones, cement and sand. The blocks were placed on the bank of the river and now they are just lying there are the water level has gone down. Sohel Rana made away with around 200-300 of such blocks.
It is matter of grave concern that he does not feel that hundreds of houses will be washed away if the water level rises and they find way in the absence of the blocks on the embankment. He came to the conclusion that this is no big deal as they were just ‘lying there’.
The rainy season is just around the corner and soon the water level will rise. The embankment will be greatly damaged if the blocks are not there and many of the locals will lose their everything to the river.
The local administration was supposed to ensure security and maintenance of the embankment. But Sohel could still make away with the blocks in trucks. We wonder why they are yet to act and bring Sohel to book. Stern actions should be taken against people like him who do things to leave the embankment in danger.
