Ruman shines in World Archery Champs
Mohammad Ruman Shana, who earlier qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the first Bangladeshi archer, bagged the country's first-ever medal - a bronze - in the World Archery Championships on Sunday, reports UNB.
Competing in the men's individual recurve, he beat Mauro Nespoli of Italy by 7-1 set points at s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.
Ruman conceded a 3-7 set points defeat to Malaysia's Khairul Anuar Mohamad in the semifinal on Thursday.
But Bangladesh's first ace archer had confirmed his place for Tokyo 2020 beating Van Den Berg Sjef of Netherlands by 6-2 set points in the quarterfinal.
However, the 24-year-old archer from Khulna has become the second Bangladeshi athlete to qualify for the Olympics on merit after golfer Siddikur Rahman, who took part in the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The ongoing World Archery Championship is considered as the primary qualification tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Shana also defeated two-time world champion Kim Woojin of South Korea by 6-4 set points in the World Championships.
Before the bronze medal game on Sunday, secretary general of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Syed Shahed Reza, Bangladesh Archery Federation (BAF) president M Moinul Islam and general secretary Kazi Razibuddin Ahmed Chapal had expressed their satisfaction over Ruman's feat of achieving qualification for Olympics.
General secretary Kazi Razibuddin Ahmed Chapal said, "Ruman made us proud and we dedicate our achievements to the country."
