SA Games 2019: Archers win first gold

Bangladesh men’s archery team have secured their first gold medal beating Sri Lanka in recurve team final by 3-2 set point at Pokhara Stadium on Sunday.

This was the 8th gold medal for Bangladesh in the 13th South Asian Games.

Bangladesh men’s recurve team comprises Mohammad Ruman Shana, Mohammad Tamimul Islam and Hakim Ahmed Rubel.

This was the best performance of Bangladesh in archery in South Asian Games.

Bangladesh team win the first set by 55-51 points but lost the second set by 55-57 points. In the third set, Ruman Shana, Tamimul Islam and Hakim Ahmed Rubel secured a win by 54-51 points while the fourth set was tied by 54-54 points.

Earlier, Bangladesh archers brightened their chances to earn more gold medals in the 13th South Asian Games as they reached the finals of all the 10 events of archery at Pokhara Stadium in Nepal on Saturday.

Bangladeshi archers hope to win the remaining nine gold medals.

Archer Ruman Shana said, “For the first time I’ve taken part in the SA Games. I’m feeling wonderful winning gold in my first outing. I’ve reached finals in all other events of archery and hope to win the remaining gold medals.”

UNB adds: In the men’s recurve singles, Ruman Shana reached the final beating Ashim Sherchan of Nepal by 6-0 set points in the quarter-final and later he beat his compatriot Mohammad Tamimul Islam by 6-2 set points in the semi-final on the day.

Shana will play for the gold against Kinley Tshering of Bhutan in the men’s recurve singles final.

Tamimul beat Lam Dorji of Bhutan by 6-2 set points in the quarter-final before conceding a 2-6 set points defeat to Shana.

Tamimul will play against De Silva Sajeev of Sri Lanka in the bronze medal deciding match.

In the women’s recurve singles, Eti Khatun advanced to the final beating Rai Mitra of Nepal by 6-0 set points in the quarter-final and later she defeated Karma of Bhutan by 6-0 set points in the semi-final.

Eti will play against Sonam Dema of Bhutan in the final.

Mehnaz Aktar Monira beat Aisha Tamang of Nepal by 7-3 set points in the quarter-final but loose to Sonam Dema in by 5-6 set points in their semi-final.

In the men’s compound singles, Sohel Rana reached the final beating Sanatah Malla of Nepal by 142-138 scores in their quarter-final after beating his compatriot Ashim Kumar Das by 145-144 scores in the semi-final.

Sohel will play against Tandin Dorji of Bhutan in the final.

Ashim beat Udaya Perera of Sri Lanka by 145-136 scores in the quarter-final before conceding 144-145 scores defeat to his compatriot Sohel Rana.

Ashim will play against Kumara of Sri Lanka in the bronze place deciding match.

In the women’s compound singles, Suma Bishwash reached final beating Thakshila Damayanthi of Sri Lanka by 141-137 scores in the semi-final.

Suma will play for the gold against Anuradha Karunarante of Sri Lanka in the final.

Susmita Banik conceded a 140-141 scores defeat to Anuradha Karunarante in their semi-final. Susmita will play against Thakshila Damayanthi in bronze place deciding match.

Bangladesh women’s recurve team comprises Eti Khatun, Mehnaz Aktar Monira and Beauty Roy beat Nepal by 6-0 set points in their semi-final. The team will play final against Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh recurve mixed team comprises Mohammad Ruman Shana and Eti Khatun beat Nepal by 6-2 set points in their semi-final. They will play against Bhutan in final.

Bangladesh men’s compound team comprises Sohel Rana, Ashim Kumar Das and Md Asiquzzaman beat Nepal by 224-215 scores in the semi-final. The team will face Bhutan in final.

Bangladesh women’s compound team comprises Suma Bishwash, Susmita Banik and Shyamoli Roy will play against Sri Lanka in women’s compound teams final and Bangladesh compound mixed team comprises Sohel Rana and Susmita Banik will face hosts Nepal in compound mixed teams final.
