Shahadat, his wife plead innocent

Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife on Thursday appeared before a Dhaka tribunal and pleaded innocent, in a case filed over beating their 11-year house help.

Shahadat Hossain and his wife Jesmin Jahan appeared before the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on the last day of attestation of witnesses in the case.

Justice Tanjila Ismail of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 fixed 31 October for producing arguments.

The couple is still on bail in the case.

Prosecutor Ali Asgar Shwapan said the investigation officer of the case, Shafiqur Rahman, a former inspector of the Mirpur Model police station, testified in the case Thursday.

He said a total of seven witnesses testified in the case.

In last year, Shahadat and his wife were sued under women and children repression prevention law allegedly for torturing their domestic help, 11-year Mahfuza Akhter Happy.

The 29-year cricketer, who has also played 51 ODIs (one-day internationals) for Bangladesh, was suspended from all forms of the cricket on 13 September following the allegation.
