The man behind the miracle

England captain Steven Gerrard is best known as the marauding midfielder who lifted Liverpool from the floor when 3-0 down to AC Milan at half-time, to win the 2005 Champions League, a night now known as "the Miracle of Istanbul."

Nine years later Gerrard is widely respected as a world class player. He won the UEFA Cup in 2001, and made the Champions League final again in 2007 (losing to AC Milan), but he is yet to win the Premier League with his beloved Liverpool.

Brazil will be his third consecutive World Cup with England. This 2014 World Cup is likely to be his final outing as an England player and most pundits believe he is the right man to lead England out of a difficult group and inspire them in the cut-throat knock-out stages.
