Bangladesh national cricket team’s former left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain Rubel passed away after a long battle with brain cancer at 5:00 PM on Tuesday.

Rubel breathed his last at the United Hospital in the capital. He was 40.

Rubel was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March 2019. The tumor was successfully removed in a surgery in Singapore. Rubel was also gradually recovering.

But on Tuesday, his physical condition worsened suddenly. He was then taken to the hospital where the physicians declared that he was no more.

Rubel fought a prolonged battle against the ailment. After his operation in Singapore he went through 24 chemotherapies. His condition was slowly improving.

But in January another tumor was discovered in his brain. One side of his body became numb. He was admitted to a hospital in March. He had to be taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His family was struggling to bear the medical expenses. The country’s cricket fraternity extended their helping hand towards Rubel’s family. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s organisation Monarch Mart donated Tk 1.5 million for his treatment during this time.

After staying at the hospital for nearly a month, he returned home on 15 April. He was supposed to start chemotherapy from next week. But his three-year-long battle against the illness ended on Tuesday.
