Karate player Humaira Akther brought home the first medal for Bangladesh in the 13th South Asian Games, winning a bronze medal in women's individual kata event in Kathmandu on Monday.
Pakistan and Nepal grabbed the gold and silver medals respectively.
After winning the medal, an elated Humaira told Prothom Alo, "I can't express my delight in words."
Champion for five times at the national level, Humaira, however, said, "My performance was not up to the mark. I had the confidence but it is matter of frustration that I could not win the gold."
Humaira will play tomorrow (Tuesday) in women's group kumi event. "I hope tomorrow I'll be able to do better than today."
She passed HSC exam this year from Willes Little Flower School and College.
Humaira's father, Ashraful Alam, a businessman, always encourages her and her sister Jannatul Ferdous in sports. "My family always encourages me. Besides, my college teachers and classmates helped me continue my studies."
