Bangladesh shines in 58th int'l math Olympiad

Bangladesh has topped the list among all the South Asian countries in the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2017 held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Bangladesh ranked 26th scoring 111 points among the 111 countries taking part in the competition.
The six-member Bangladesh team took home two silvers, two bronze medals and two honorable mentions from the prestigious competition.
Asif-e-Elahi from Sylhet Murari Chand (MC) College and Ahmed Zawad Chowdhury from Chittagong’s Cantonment English School and College won silver medal while Rahul Saha from Dhaka College and Tamzid Morshed Rubab from Notre Dame College grabbed bronze medals.
The other two - M Nayeemul Islam and Sabbir Rahman - took home honorable mentions.
South Korea topped the list of winners with 170 points this year while and Vietnam became second and third respectively.
Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee vice president Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said, “It’s an extraordinary success for Bangladesh we rank higher than any other South Asian country including India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.”
The selection process for participating in the IMO is organised across the country through the Dutch-Bangla-Prothom Alo Mathematics Festival.
The young math talents are selected by the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee. The math festival is sponsored by the DBBL and arranged by Prothom Alo.
