The central and Sylhet unit Awami League (AL) leaders called upon the demonstrating students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) to go home.

The leaders—led by central unit AL organising secretary Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, Sylhet city AL general secretary Zakir Hossain and district unit AL vice president Ashfaq Ahmed—made this appeal on Tuesday at around 12:00pm at university’s Golchattor.

However, just after the delivery of AL leaders' speeches, the students started chanting slogans demanding the resignation of vice chancellor (VC) Farid Uddin Ahmed.

The Awami League leaders said they always support the students’ movement. As the university administration accepted the demands of the students, they should go back home. The foreign minister took responsibility of the injured students.

Meanwhile, the AL leaders went to the VC's residence at around 1:30pm. Following them, students with a procession also approached the VC residence chanting slogans.

As of filing this report at 3:00pm, they were demonstrating in front of the VC residence.
