DU emerges national round champ of Jessup Moot Court competition 2019
The 3rd Bangladesh qualifying round of Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2019 was held at the Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) on 21-23 February. The University of Dhaka emerged as the new champion and Eastern University runner-up of the national round of Jessup Bangladesh 2019 among the 31 participating universities.
The various award categories included best memorials, best mooter, best new team etc. Psymhe Wadud from Dhaka University (DU) bagged the Best Mooter award for her excellent performance. DU also received the best memorial award. BRAC University and Jagannath University were respectively awarded the second best memorial and third best memorial awards. North East University and Northern University were jointly recognised with the Spirit of the Jessup Award. Jahangirnagar University was announced the best new team.
Jessup moot court competition is one of the most renowned competitions of law students that gather participants from more than 100 countries in the international round. Jessup Bangladesh competition is the national round of the international competition, which is the fifth largest qualifying round.
This is the third time that Bangladesh is hosting the national qualifying round. International Law Students Association Bangladesh (ILSA) in association with the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development Assistance and Training (OPDAT)- US Department of Justice (DoJ), TEER- City Group, Independent University, Bangladesh, and Bangladesh Chapter of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL Bangladesh), jointly organised the competition in Bangladesh.
Attorney general for Bangladesh Mahbubey Alam, as chief guest, inaugurated the competition on 21 February held at Hotel Amari in Dhaka. The competition rounds started from 22 February and the final rounds of the competition were held on 23 February.
Judges of the final round, Justice Muhammad Imman Ali, Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Mamoon Rahman were present at the closing ceremony of the competition held at IUB on 23 February.
In the closing session, the guests highly appreciated the noticeable participation of female law students in the competition and applauded the equal representation of women.
Eric Opanga, Resident Legal Advisor, US Department of Justice, OPDAT, US Embassy, Dhaka, thanked the organisers for their endeavor. Md. Forhad Hossain, head of sales of City Group, wished participants success. He hoped that the participants would make significant contribution to the country.
Justice Muhammad Imman Ali expressed his pleasure in judging the competition.
Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed shared his experience of judging in regional mooting competitions and appreciated the norm of mooting that is being developed.
Justice Mamoon Rahman wished the participants success.
Professor M Omar Rahman, vice chancellor of Independent University, congratulated the participants. He commended the competition for providing a platform that helps law students develop their skills.
The two finalist teams of the Bangladesh qualifying round will participate in the international round of the 60th Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court competition to be held in Washington DC.
