Ruhul Amin Sharif was working at the Bangladesh Krishi Bank’s Hatia branch on 30 June when one of his colleagues informed him that final results of the 38th Bangladesh Cardre Service (BCS) had been published. Ruhul could remember his roll number, but still quickly went home to verify it. Once confirmed, he started to skim through the list from the bottom and could not find his roll number. After a while he looked at the top of the administration cadre list to find his roll number at the very top!

It took him a while to believe that he has stood first in the much-coveted administration cadre. Ruhul immediately thought of his father after getting his results.

“My father was upset as I couldn’t do well after the higher secondary level. He said he would only be happy if I can become the best in the country at any level. So the first thing I did was inform him my about results,” Ruhul said.

During his BCS preparation, Ruhul Amin never studied at any coaching center and was always confident about his success.

Ruhul Amin is from Dayakanda village of Bishnandi union in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj. His father had been involved the textile trade for 30 years but now looks after his own crop lands. His mother Rehana Akhter is a housewife.

Talking with Prothom Alo over the phone, Ruhul said he only thought of two recruitment examinations—BCS or banking.

He avoided the usual method of BCS preparation.

“I’ve seen everyone take coaching classes for BCS preparation. Students also take preparation by taking notes regularly. But did neither,” Ruhul said.

It was Ruhul’s first BCS. He got a good idea of the question pattern by going through the question papers of previous BCS examinations. Ruhul used to teach as a tutor when he was a student and this helped him a great deal.

“I found that BCS exams comprised of many subjects which I taught. Many students get admitted into the coaching centers for preparation but I taught many such subjects during my tuition.”

I was upset when my son couldn’t keep up his good academic performance. But I’ve forgotten all that after he stood first in BCS. I will be happy if he can serve the country with integrity.”
