Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday his party would unveil the framework of a party-neutral election-time government in due time.

“Every issue has an appropriate time. We will present the framework of election-time government before the nation in such an appropriate time,” Mirza Fakhrul told newsmen at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters.

Fakhrul was speaking to newsmen after inaugurating a free medical camp organised by pro-BNP physicians’ platform Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) at the party office marking the 82nd anniversary of birth of BNP’s founder and late president Ziaur Rahman.

The secretary general of country’s main opposition political party BNP said his party wants a party-neutral government to oversee the next general elections so that a level-playing field is created for all political parties.

“BNP wants neither the AL-government nor the Hasina-led government to oversee the polls. No fair polls can be held under the current government,” said Fakhrul.

“But,” he continued, “They [Bangladesh Awami League] don’t listen to our demand and don’t even want to allow a neutral government to run the poll-time administration because they know they will face a huge debacle if elections are held freely and fairly under a neutral government.”

Listing names of several leaders and activists of his party, the BNP leader said newer cases are being filed against BNP activists every day and they are being arrested across the country.

“On the other hand, the government is speaking of the election. The question is, how will a fair election be possible if this situation continues?” he asked.
