RAB 'picks up' 3 DU students

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) allegedly picked up three students of Dhaka University from the campus following a reported altercation on Thursday night.

The students are Tanveer, Foysal, residents of Bijoy Ekattar Hall and Surja Sen Hall’s Imran.

Some of the DU students said their fellows were picked up by the RAB members after the three accidentally broke glass of a microbus of the elite force.

Dhaka University proctor AKM Golam Rabbani confirmed identities of the students to Prothom Alo.

RAB law and media wing chief Mufti Mahmud Khan however said it is a false allegation.

Describing the incident, some of the students said nowadays young bikers from Old Dhaka city enter the campus and taunt them. On Thursday, some of the young bikers indecently behaved with a female student of the university.

Three students, including linguistics department’s Tanveer, barred them and chased after them riding a motorcycle, they said.

The witnesses further said when the students reached the campus around 9:30pm, their bike hit a Hiace microbus on a road in front of the Arts Faculty Building of the university. Then, a few RAB men came out of the vehicle and beat them mercilessly and took them away.

The motorcycle was taken to Shahbagh police station after the incident.

Following the incident, the university students vandalised a few vehicles, including the RAB and police’s ones on the campus.

They blocked the road in front of the Arts Faculty Building.

Later, president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling Awami League, along with other leaders and activists took control of the situation.

DU assistant proctor Sohel Rana told Prothom Alo that they were looking into the matter.

Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Abul Hasan said he was informed about the matter.

The police are looking into it, he said.
