India and Bangladesh launched Dhaka-Kolkata container train service for the first time on Tuesday.

The trial run of the service was flagged off from the Container Corporation Depot near Majerhat railway station of Kolkata at 9:00am Tuesday. General manager of eastern railways of India, Harinder Rao inaugurated the launching ceremony.

Rao said the transportation of goods by train instead of ship would reduce the cost and save time.

Eastern Railways spokesman Rabi Mahapatra said the service would be continued if Bangladesh authorities agree.

A train containing rice, fruits and animal feed would enter Bangladesh via Darshana railway station.
