
Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s election candidate for Shariatpur-3 Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu was arrested on charges of seizing Tk 80 million before the election.
Deputy captain of RAB-1, Ishtiaque Ahmed, said that they arrested Apu from the capital’s United Hospital on Friday.
The Rapid Action Battalion officer, however, added that Apu will undergo treatment in the United Hospital under RAB custody.
Apu came under attack on 24 December allegedly by Awami League men in Shariatpur’s Gosairhat upazila while campaigning for the election.
According to RAB, Apu is connected with the seizure of Tk 80 million which was meant to use for influencing the election.
The RAB on 25 December arrested three people, including a businessman, along with around Tk 80 million in cash and cheque of Tk 100 million more which was meant to use for influencing the 30 December election, the elite forces told a press conference then.
They also claimed that they had found brochures of BNP nominated candidate for Shariatpur-3 constituency Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu on the spot and the brochures also featured BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
The RAB also claimed they had found proofs that Tk 35 million was sent to Mia Nuruddin.
