Workers of a readymade garment (RMG) factory staged demonstrations in front of the factory in Zirani area of Gazipur city on Monday afternoon pressing various demands including a hike in attendance bonus.
Protesting workers also took position on the Chandra-Nabinagar road, bringing a halt to vehicular movement on the both sides of the road.
According to workers and industry police sources, the workers of clothing factory Redial International Limited in Zirani area demonstrated last week seeking various demands including a rise in attendance bonus.
At that time, factory owners assured the workers of meeting their demands. As no initiative has been taken to implement those so far, workers stage demonstration in front of the factory during lunch break on Monday.
The demonstration stopped vehicular movement on the road in the Zirani Bazar area and caused long tailbacks on both side of the road, bringing passenger miseries.
Abdul Momin, a worker of the factory, said, “The factory authorities have not yet implemented the workers’ demands despite the announcement last week. This time workers will protest until they meet the demands. The factory owners are not keeping their words despite making repeated assurances.”
Gazipur industrial zone’s assistant police superintendent of police Abu Taleb said workers started demonstrating around 1:00pm pressing various demands and took position to the Chandra-Nabinagar road later. They were trying to resolve the issues through talking to workers.
