Two killed in gunfight: Police

Two men were killed in what police called gunfight with them in Palpara, Cumilla early Friday, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as Arifuzzaman Emon and Jahangir from the upazila.

Parimol Das, sub-inspector of detective branch police, said tipped-off that the robber gang was preparing for committing robbery in the area, kotowali thana police and DB police jointly went to the spot to conduct a drive.

As soon as the law enforcers reached the spot, the robbers opened fire forcing them to fire back in self defence that triggered a gunfight, he added.

Police recovered bullet-injured two robbers from the spot and took them to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where physicians declared them dead, SI Parimol said.

A LG gun, shells of five rounds of bullets, two daggers, and a knife were recovered from the spot, he added.

There were seven to eight cases including that of murder against the deceased.

According to the human rights body Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in 2018 while 370 killed in 2019 in such gunfight, crossfire and shootouts with different law enforcement agencies.

At least 21 people were killed in gunfights, shootouts and crossfires in the first month 2020, ASK said on its website.
