Awami League (AL) has decided to send show-cause letters to its rebel candidates, who contested in upazila polls against party-nominated candidates, from 8 September.

The decision was taken at a secretariat meeting of the party at the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office in the city on Tuesday.

“Show-cause letters will be sent to the rebel candidates, who contested in upazila polls against party-nominated candidates, from 8 September,” AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told a press conference after the meeting.

If it is found that any senior leader of the party was linked with the rebel candidates, the party will take decision about them on the basis of evidence after discussion in the party forum, he added.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said punitive measures would be taken against the rebel candidates who will violate party decision in future.

“AL is run as per the directives of party president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina. It’s a well organised political party,” he said, adding that decision on organisational tours will be taken at the party’s policy making meeting next.

“Awami League is prepared for holding council. It is now awaiting party president’s order,” the AL general secretary said.

Replying to a question, Quader said putting pressure on Myanmar is being continued to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

But Rohingya crisis and Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) list are not the same, he said, adding that India has assured Bangladesh of not to be worried about Assam’s NRC issue.

The minister said AL candidate for by-poll to Rangpur-3 constituency will be nominated at party’s nomination board meeting at prime minister’s official residence Ganabhaban on 7 September.

AL joint secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanok and Abdur Rahman, organizing secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Misbah Uddin Siraj, BM Mozammel Haque, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, publicity and publication secretary Hasan Mahmud, office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, religious affairs secretary Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and deputy office secretary Biplab Barua joined the meeting, among others.
