Fitness certificates of 33pc buses invalid: BRTA

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has said fitness certificates of 33 per cent buses in the capital are invalid.
In a survey conducted on 39 buses in Dhaka city, the government body also found that 56 per cent buses have no speed control stickers either.
The BRTA on Thursday submitted a report to a High Court bench comprising justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and justice Md Ashraful Kamal.
The road and transport watchdog earlier formed a body to conduct the survey following a HC writ.
The report said as the matter of survey was somehow leaked out, many vehciles avoided the survey locations.
In the report, the BRTA recommended that the unfit vehicles be prevented from taking to the roads in order to bring the number of road accidents and the death toll under control.
It also recommended that a scientific survey be commissioned to identify the intensity of the problem.
To this end, a specialised body can be set up to conduct a detailed survey, it added.
