LNG supply to finally begin 4 July

The supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the national grid will begin on 4 July this year.

The process was scheduled to begin last month, which was later postponed due to a technical glitch.

“We are eyeing 4 July. If the situation is ideal, it could even begin earlier,” Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) managing director Md Kamruzzaman told Prothom Alo.

RPGCL, a wing of Petrobangla, is supervising the import of LNG and its regasification.

Preliminarily, according to the officials at Petrobangla and power, energy and mineral resources ministry, 350 million cubic feet of gas will be added to the national grid for distribution in the Chattogram region.

The officials said the government began the process of LNG export in 2010. Following the effort, the floating terminal, which will be used to preserve LNG and its regasification, reached Maheshkhali on 24 April.

The addition of the gas to the national grid was delayed due to a technical glitch, found while linking the terminal and pipeline under sea. The glitch was fixed on Tuesday, officials added.

The addition of 350 million cubic feet LNG to the national grid, however, will not be enough to meet the demand of gas as the deficit of supply is around 1.1 billion cubic feet, said the RPGCL managing director.
