Technocrat minister Nurul Islam resigns

Hours after prime minister Sheikh Hasina asked four technocrat ministers of the current cabinet to step down, Nurul Islam BSc has resigned from the expatriates' welfare and overseas employment ministry.

He submitted his resignation letter to the cabinet division on Tuesday evening, said his assistant private secretary Niaj Morshed Niru, reports news agency UNB.

Nurul Islam's personal secretary Abul Hasnat Humayun Kabir submitted the resignation letter to the cabinet division on behalf of the minister around 6:30pm, he added.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister directed the four technocrat ministers to quit the cabinet, ruling Bangladesh Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader told newsmen at Ganabhaban after the cabinet meeting.

He, however, said the other ministers will remain there as usual in their respective posts.

The four technocrat ministers are religious affairs minister principal Matior Rahman, posts, telecommunications and information technology minister Mustafa Jabbar, expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister Nurul Islam BSc and science and technology minister architect Yafesh Osman.
