Death toll rises to five as girder removed from car

The girder of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project that fell on a private car has been removed from the crashed vehicle in the capital’s Uttara area.

As many as five bodies have been recovered from the twisted car. The fire service and civil defence confirmed this to Prothom Alo.

The incident occurred in front of Paradise Tower in Jashimuddin road area of Uttara on Monday afternoon.

The passengers were returning to Ashulia from Kawla, DakhshinKhan after attending a wedding reception (Bou Bhat) for Ridoy (26) and Riya Moni (21). The newlywed couple and five of their relatives were in the vehicle, said Uttara Paschim (West) police station officer in-charge (OC) Mohammad Mohsin.

Immediately after the incident, Ridoy and Riya were taken out from the vehicle. But it took three hours to recover the bodies of the other five passengers.

Ridoy’s father Mohammad Rubel Mia (60) was driving the car. Riya’s mother Mosammat Fahima (37) was also in the vehicle. Both of them passed away.

Fahima’s sister Jhorna (26) and her two children Jannatul (six) and Md Zakaria (4) also lost their lives in the incident.

Ridoy and Riya have been admitted into Crescent Hospital in Uttara. Both are out of danger but are mentally devastated, said OC Md Mohsin.
