Police dispersed the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) gathered at the central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday to observe the hunger strike in expressing solidarity with the demonstrating students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal is the student wing of de facto opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Before leaving the Shaheed Minar around noon, the JCD members demanded the removal of SUST vice-chancellor (VC) Farid Uddin Ahmed and the withdrawal of a police case filed against the agitated students, reports UNB.

JCD president Fazlur Rahman Khokon said, "We condemn the heinous attack on the students. We are demanding the immediate resignation of VC Farid Uddin Ahmed."

JCD general secretary Iqbal Hosen Shyamol said "VC means teacher and teacher means guardian, but SUST VC showed us his authoritarian behaviour."

JCD Dhaka University unit joint convener Nasir Uddin Nasir said, "We had planned to hold the hunger strike till 3:00pm Tuesday, but the police barred us to do that."
