The youth killed in a 'gunfight' with detectives in Meradia area of Dhaka city early Sunday was picked up by some unknown people from Basundia in Jessore last February, according to the victim’s father, Abul Kalam Azad.
Talking to the Prothom Alo correspondent at his home at Baluigachha village of Dhuliharh union under Satkhira sadar upazila on Monday, victim’s father said Mukul went to his in-law’s house in Jessore.
The father said his son was picked up on 23 February- just four days into his marriage. Mukul got married on 19 February.
After the ‘gunfight’, the police had claimed the youth to be Shariful alias Shakib alias Sharif alias Saleh alias Arif alias Hadi, but his family members said Monday he is Mukul Rana, not Shariful.
Mukul’s brother-in-law Amir Hossain had also filed a general diary with the Koltwali police station 2 or 3 days after his disappearance, said Mukul’s father.
According to a report on Dhaka Metropolitan Police website, Shariful alias Shakib alias Sharif alias Saleh alias Arif alias Hadi was killed in a 'gunfight' with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Banshpotti area around 3:00am on Sunday.

Police had announced a bounty of Tk 5 lakh for information about Mukul last month, publishing the photograph of Mukul as Shariful along with five other suspected militants.
