'Gunfight' victim Mukul Rana, not Shariful: Family
The youth killed in a 'gunfight' with police in Meradia area of Dhaka early Sunday was identified by his family members as Mukul Rana although the police had claimed him to be Shariful.
Relatives of the deceased said Mukul was a honours second year student at Satkhira Government College.
Mukul’s brother-in-law Hedayetul Islam said they did not know what Mukul used to do in Dhaka. They do not have any clue about his involvement with any group either.
He said they came to receive the body of Mukul after spotting him on the television.
According to a report on Dhaka Metropolitan Police website, Shariful alias Shakib alias Sharif alias Saleh alias Arif alias Hadi was killed in a 'gunfight' with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Banshpotti area around 3:00am on Sunday.
Police claimed Mukul was the chief of the military and IT section of banned Ansarullah Bangla Team and involved in the killing of blogger Avijit Roy murder.
Police announced a reward of Tk 2-5 lakh for information about Mukul (Shariful as claimed by police) and six other suspected militants, and published their photographs in media last month.
