'Faraaz is Bangladesh'
“Faraaz will remain forever among us as a symbol of friendship and will inspire young people at home and abroad. His friendship had no bounds and this is Bangladesh.”
These words were spoken at a discussion on “Not Militancy, Faraaz is Bangladesh”, organised by Rabia Khatun Memorial Library and Simanta Sangskritik Sangsad in the border-lying village Dhaleswar of Akhaura in Brahmanbaria.
The meeting held on Friday, 5 August, was presided over by the library’s founder and Supreme Court lawyer Aksir M Chowdhury. President of Comilla’s Akhaura Chhatra Kalyan Samity, Saidur Rahman, addressed the meeting, saying, “Militancy and terrorism have generated panic. Awareness will free us from this panic and fear. And Faraaz’s friendship will give us the courage to face danger.”
Books, playing fields and cultural activities can prevent youth from being misled. The discussants stressed the need for educational institutions to regularly sing the national anthem and arouse patriotism in the students.
On 1 July, the 20-year-old Faraaz had gone to the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, along with two friends. The militants told Faraaz he could go free, but Faraaz did not abandon his friends. The next day police recovered the dead bodies of Faraaz and his two friends. Since then the local and international media have highlighted Faraaz’s supreme sacrifice.
Prayers for the departed soul of Faraaz were offered at the end of the discussion.
